CONGRATULATION TO CANADIAN CARP CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 2009 FINALISTS.
ANDREW SORYS
JASON McBRIDE
RANDY ESTABROOKS
2009 could be the year that saw match angling for carp in Ontario finally come of age. 41 anglers competed in the annual carp fishing tournament hosted by the Canadian Carp Club on Sunday, August 30, 2009, in Hamilton, Ontario, on Pier 8.
Pier 8, familiar to many south-western Ontario carp anglers, is a man-made concrete slab consisting of a north-facing side of approximately 500metres. Pier 8 is home to the new Canada Marine Discovery Centre.
This tournament had the highest payout amongst all carp tournaments in Ontario with around $8200 in cash and prizes donated by generous sponsors. Registration was closed to new applicants the week prior to the event, as all pegs were already taken.
Registration started at 6am with an introduction and briefing from Andrzej Tyminiewski of the Canadian Carp Club. The peg draw took place at 7am, giving anglers one hour of preparation time before the official start at 8am.
This venue provides around 30ft depth immediately along the whole stretch of Pier 8; allowing anglers to use a variety of techniques, including float fishing and ledgering.
Unfortunately a cold spell of weather (in August!!) and a particularly cold morning, ensured that fishing would be difficult for the 41 competing anglers (including 2 lady anglers: Joanne and Claudia). The rain held off; but most anglers were forced to fish in warm clothing.
A rule-change was made due to the height above the water of each peg, whereby anglers could receive assistance landing fish. A weighing station was established for those who wanted to weigh fish during the tournament rather than attempting to suspend keepnets into the water.
Entrance fees were $40 per angler, with the option of a $10 Big Fish Pool (100% payout) and a $10 Winner Takes All Pool (also 100% payout).
By the final whistle at 3pm the clear winner and 2009 Canadian Carp Club champion was Andrew Sorys, fishing peg 5, and landing 3 carp weighing 7lb 3oz, 8lb 3oz and 6lb 6oz. His reward: first prize of $534; Winner Takes All Pool of $340; and a Shimano Technium Feeder rod.
Second place went to Jason McBride with a single carp. Jason took home $356 and a Gift Voucher from Long Sault for two anglers with two days accommodation. Jason’s carp of 8lb 8oz also enabled him to take home the Big Fish Pool of $370 and a Carp Candy Basket. Randy Estabrooks, fishing from atop a picnic table due to being pegged at the railings, spodded hard during the final hour of the tournament to land an 8lb carp providing third prize of $178 and a Shimano Technium Feeder Rod. Fourth placed Randy Lei (6lb 8oz) was awarded a Bayron Rod Case.
All anglers remained well past the finish time and warmly congratulated the 4 winners. A barbecue was including for all competitors; and because of the overwhelming generosity of our sponsors, all anglers went home with goodies including bait, groundbait, fishing tackle, automotive services, etc.
A huge thank you from all competitors for all the Prizes donated by sponsors including: Marukyu, Shimano Canada, New World Carp Tackle, Fishing World, “Canadian Carp Club Long Sault Motel”, Carp Candy, Wychwood, ESP, Brookhouse Auto Tech N' Tire, Kamasan, Tandem Bait, Top Mix.
Tommy Lam, of Marukyu, made a presentation of his company’s products.
Thank you to all who make this event possible. Lorne, Stephen, Jim, Len, Daniel; also Joanne and Claudia for helping with the prize draw. Thank you to Roman Runo for pictures and video clip, thanks to Big Fish Addict for pictures already posted.
